Microplastics (plastics less then 5?mm) contamination is of worldwide concern and represents a threat to the environment, biota, and humans. Also, they are potential carriers of other contaminants, increasing their adverse effects. In this study, it was analyzed for the first time the chemical composition and abundance of microplastics (MPs) in the commercial shrimp Pleoticus muelleri. Fibers were the predominant plastics (mean 1.31 fibers g-1 wet weight) in the abdominal muscle of the shrimps being black, the dominant colour. μ-Raman showed that fibers were composed of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and cellulose. Also, weathering and topography of the fibers were analyzed through wide-field confocal microscopy. C, O, Si, Al, K, as well as Fe, Zn, S, Ba, Br, and Ti on the plastic surface were detected with SEM/EDS, indicating potential carriers of contaminants. CAPSULE The shrimp Pleoticusmuelleri ingests fibers with different chemical elements adsorbed on the plastic surface.Marine debris on the seafloor has not been thoroughly investigated, and there is little information compared to other types of marine debris. We conducted bottom trawl surveys to determine the present situation of marine debris on the seafloor in offshore areas around Japan. The survey was conducted in three sea areas with different characteristics. As a result, it was found that the amount of marine debris in submarine canyons (2926.1 items/km2) was higher than on the continental shelf. It was revealed that most marine debris on the seafloor is comprised of plastic products, and that debris on the seafloor retains its condition for a long time (over 30 years) without deterioration. In addition, the type of marine debris is affected by the industries operating in each area. Continuing to investigate marine debris on the seafloor in more areas will contribute to solving the problem of marine debris.A fuzzy decision tree (FDT) based framework was developed to facilitate the selection of suitable oil spill response methods in the Arctic. Hypothetical oil spill cases were developed based on six identified attributes, while the suitability of three spill response methods (mechanical containment and recovery, use of chemical dispersants, and in-situ burning) for each spill case was obtained based on expert judgments. Fuzzy sets were used to address the associated uncertainties, and FDTs were then developed through generating i) one decision tree for all three response methods (FDT-AP1) and ii) one decision tree for each response method and the development of linear regression models at terminal nodes (FDT-LR). The FDT-LR approach exhibited higher prediction accuracy than the FDT-AP1 approach. A maximum of 100% accurate predictions could be achieved for testing cases using it. On average, 75% of suitable oil spill response methods out of 10,000 performed iterations were predicted correctly.Night-shift workers are exposed to nocturnal light and are more prone to circadian rhythm disorders. This systematic review and meta-analysis studied the association between night-shift work and melatonin levels. Pubmed and Embase databases were used for literature searching. The pooled standardized mean differences (SMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to compare the differences between night-shift workers and the controls.
Thirty-three studies reported in 25 articles (1845 night-shift workers and 3414 controls, mean age 45.12 years) were included after a systematic literature review. Data of circulating melatonin levels and its metabolites, 6-sulfatoxymelatonin (aMT6s) in urine were collected for meta-analysis. The results showed that the first morning-void aMT6s level in night-shift workers was significantly lower than in day workers (SMD=-0.101, 95% CI=-0.179 to-0.022, P=0.012). Our findings indicate that experience of night-shift work is associated with suppression of melatonin production, especially among fixed night-shift workers.Sodium oxybate (SO), the sodium salt of γ-hydroxybutyric acid, is one of the primary pharmacologic agents used to treat excessive sleepiness, disturbed nighttime sleep, and cataplexy in narcolepsy. The sodium content of SO ranges from 550 to 1640 mg at 3-9 g, given in two equal nightly doses. Clinicians are advised to consider daily sodium intake in patients with narcolepsy who are treated with SO and have comorbid disorders associated with increased cardiovascular (CV) risk, in whom sodium intake may be a concern. It remains unclear whether all patients with narcolepsy treated with SO should modify or restrict their sodium intake. No data are currently available specific to the sodium content or threshold of SO at which patients might experience increased CV risk. To appraise attributable risk, critical evaluation of the literature was conducted to examine the relationship between CV risk and sodium intake, narcolepsy, and SO exposure. The findings suggest that increased CV risk is associated with extremes of daily sodium intake, and that narcolepsy is associated with comorbidities that may increase CV risk in some patients. However, data from studies regarding SO use in patients with narcolepsy have shown a very low frequency of CV side effects (eg, hypertension) and no overall association with CV risk. In the absence of data that specifically address CV risk with SO based on its sodium content, the clinical evidence to date suggests that SO treatment does not confer additional CV risk in patients with narcolepsy.Shear elastic modulus (G) can differ among individuals due to muscle size and other factors, even for constant muscle force. G of the triceps brachii was measured using shear wave elastography during each trial. Cross-sectional area (CSA) and muscle thickness (MT) of the triceps brachii were measured at rest. Scaled G was calculated as a product of G and CSA or MT ("G-CSA" and "G-MT", respectively). Within-individual linear regressions were conducted between absolute torque and the three force indicator variables.
